Spinal Compression Fractures can occur at any age. In young, healthy persons these are usually caused by trauma. However in older persons, these are often caused by the bone damaging disease, osteoporosis. When a compression fracture occurs because of Osteoporosis it often causes severe pain affecting the person's independence and ability to perform normal daily tasks.
Until recently there was not much that could be done for these fractures except provide pain medication to relieve symptoms. An innovative technique that involves inserting a small balloon into the fractured vertebral body, inflating the balloon to create a small space, and then filling the small space with cement has been very successful in treating this problem.
