ACL (Anterior Cruciate Ligament Tear)

The ACL is a major stabilizing ligament in the knee. A tear in this ligament usually occurs from a sudden change in direction. It is commonly injured by skiers and basketball players. Left untreated, it can cause pain, swelling, and too much "play" in the knee joint.

Repairing a tear in the ACL involves ligament reconstruction by replacing the torn ligament with a section of the patient's hamstring or knee tendon. Following surgery a period of physical therapy aids in recovery.
